Pinterest defines itself as “a visual discovery engine that over 320 million people around the world use every month to create the life they love“.
And we can’t help but agree.
Pinterest shows us what we want in the most aesthetically pleasing way possible. A fantastic realm of DIY and upcycling, Pinterest solves various problems:
- What should I wear today?
- What should I eat tonight?
- What do I want to do in my life?
Pinterest inspires us every day, presenting new things to do and see. One of the founders, Ben Silbermann, believes that Pinterest is fundamentally an “idea catalog” that inspires users to leave the app and bring to life what they have just seen.
With 322 million active users, Pinterest is currently among the top 100 most visited websites in the world. Pinterest influences purchasing decisions: 8 out of 10 users have purchased a product based on branded content on Pinterest.
Since 2019, Pinterest Business has also arrived in Italy, allowing companies to promote their products on this beloved social network.
And it’s Pinterest Business that sends us a newsletter dedicated to the trends of 2020, based on data collected between 2017 and 2019.
To be included among Pinterest trends, a topic must have shown consistent growth over the considered time period. Pinterest has thus compiled the top 100 emerging global trends and grouped them into 10 macro-themes.
Let’s see what they are!
1. Beyond Gender Stereotypes
More and more users desire gender-neutral products and services. From personal choices like “gender-neutral haircuts” (+625%) to choices for their children, such as “neutral names” (+301%) and “gender-neutral unisex nursery” (+527%), this theme seems to be continuously expanding. A signal that inclusivity is sought, not necessarily imposed.
2. Conscious Consumption
From small daily choices to the organization of important events, new consumers are committed to becoming increasingly eco-friendly. Some examples of the most clicked searches? “Zero-waste lifestyle” (+446%), “second-hand wedding dresses and clothes” (+41% and +38%), and a boom for “creations with used items” (+2276%).
3. Finding Balance
Pinterest users want to improve their lifestyle, reinforcing habits that truly make them feel good. In this category, we find searches like “Social media detox” (+314%) and “Enjoying the single life” (+49%), as well as the more lighthearted “Benefits of cucumber juice” (+99%).
4. Home Hub
Home is where the heart is. But perhaps it’s also your workplace, your gym, your amusement park, and your local garden. So why not work to make your home a truly functional place? We find here: “Home office outfits” (+82%), “A home theater” (+368%), “Indoor micro-gardens” (+223%), and a highly popular “Homebrewing equipment” (+411%).
5. Inspiration from Around the World
The world has never been so small, and thanks to online sharing, we can discover habits and traditions from every corner of the planet. And we want to make them our own, despite cultural appropriation. Among the most pinned themes, we find: “Spanish bathrooms” (+309%), “Japanese bathtubs” (+563%), and “Indian-style living rooms” (+2080%). To feel a bit like traveling even on our own couch.
6. Pet Pampering
Pinterest calls the growing trend of considering pets an integral part of the family “pet pampering.” This leads to very specific interests, such as “Pet resorts” (+260%), “Pet fashion” (+199%), “Recipes for dog treats” (+167%), and the delightful “Cat birthday party ideas” (+156%).
7. Responsible Travel
It’s time to change the way we travel. People are seeking ways to reduce their environmental impact without sacrificing the joy of traveling. This leads to “Eco-friendly travel” (+73%), “Zero-waste travel” (+48%), and “Eco-friendly city ideas” (+47%).
8. Nature’s Call
And after ecology and conscious consumption, a significant increase in searches related to outdoor activities could not be missed. So, we have a romantic “Lake fishing tips” (+274%), but also “Gem and mineral hunting” (+185%), “Northern lights” (+90%), and a reassuring “Nature travel” (+253%).
9. Exploring Space
Get ready for liftoff! Space will be a great inspiration for 2020. We see a lot of interest in space-themed events, such as “Moon-themed birthday party” (+589%) or “galaxy-themed” (+341%); but also for decor and clothing. Searches for “Galaxy paintings” (+157%) and “NASA hoodie” (+106%) have doubled.
10. The Return of the ’90s
After Stranger Things and San Junipero, we already knew this: nostalgia-mania has captured us. Shops are filled with vintage-style clothing, and original pieces are flying off the shelves in thrift stores. Bring out your scrunchies and clear lip gloss: the ’90s are back! “Hair scrunchies” (+6309%), “90s hair clips” (+930%), “90s streetwear” (+277%).
And what can we do with this precious data?
Pinterest encourages companies to use them to plan campaigns, come up with new products, and offer better service to customers.
