On September 4th, Twitter made advertising tools available for SMEs through an announcement on their official blog. The Twitter Ads platform had been launched in the United States last year, and now it’s made available in Italy.
This means that from now on, an SME (or anyone with a Twitter account and a credit card) can advertise on the social network without budget constraints and with complete autonomy. It’s excellent news for all those businesses, brands, and startups that want to expand their audience on Twitter or increase the reach of their tweets. Until now, advertising on Twitter was an exclusive tool because the high costs to support a campaign didn’t allow everyone to invest in Twitter.

What can you do with the Twitter advertising tool for SMEs?
The possibilities are many and allow you to choose the most suitable type of advertising for your communication and marketing plan, thus allowing you to invest only in tools that help you achieve your objectives, maximizing your investment and ROI (Return On Investment). Let’s see in detail the types of sponsorships available on Twitter Ads.
Sponsored Accounts
Twitter offers the possibility to reach more users (including those who are not yet our followers), thus increasing our community and finding new supporters. Here’s an example of a sponsored account, in this case, PayPal:

Sponsored Tweets
Allows you to advertise one or more tweets, expanding their visibility to a potential followers’ audience. Here’s an example of a sponsored tweet (Twitter Ads Italia):

Sponsored Trends
Twitter allows you to create a sponsored trend that will appear in the top Trends section. This advertising tool is useful for events, product launches, or important announcements. Here’s an example, again from Twitter Ads Italia:

Campaigns for App Downloads or Interactions with the App
Allows you to increase the number of downloads of a mobile application or increase interactions with it (in the latter case, it’s useful to encourage the use of the app by those who have downloaded it but are not using it).
Leads on Twitter
Allows you to collect the emails of people interested in the proposed offer. This type of campaign doesn’t require users to input data because with a click, they provide the email address they used to sign up for Twitter, without having to rewrite it. This type of campaign is useful, for example, for creating email lists for sending newsletters.
The available targeting options are many and resemble the model of other online advertising platforms like Google Adwords and Facebook Advertising. You can choose the audience based on keywords, interests, geographic area, gender, language, device used, or similarity to your followers. We noticed an important difference between Facebook and Twitter in geographical targeting: Twitter allows targeting users by Region, in addition to City and State. Facebook, on the other hand, doesn’t consider Regions among the targeting options, only Cities and States.
Lastly, Twitter offers the possibility to monitor the performance of ads by providing statistics on specific sponsorship metrics (Retweets, new followers, mentions, reach, etc.) and the characteristics of followers, to discover new information about your audience. The total budget and the offer can be decided based on your investment, without constraints or additional costs. In conclusion, the new advertising system on Twitter seems to be a useful tool for SMEs or anyone who wants to reach a wider audience on this social network. Now, we just have to try it out and test all its features… but we’ll tell you more about it in the upcoming articles.
